Bio-char

What is bio-char?

Bio-char is bio-mass (wood, plants, plant waste) that has been converted to charcoal, but ... not for the purpose of burning it as a fuel, instead it is retained and used in other ways.

Volatile fluids and gasses are captured and used, whereas with traditional charcoal production these "go up in smoke"

Bio-char is produced by pyrolysis: heating in the absence of oxygen, which prevents burning of the biomass (which happens in open fires)

What use is it?

Bio-char, and its byproducts, has multiple uses

---When added to the soil it can significantly improve soil fertility (especially if
some volatiles are left or re-cycled back in)

---The volatile fluids and gasses produce usable bio-fuels, that can be produced on
a sustainable basis

---The carbon, when recycled into the soil, provides a stable long term removal
of carbon (dioxide) from the atmosphere. Removing carbon from the atmosphere is
called sequestration.

Isn't planting trees good enough?

Growing trees takes a long time

There is a finite limit to how much carbon an acre of forest can store

When trees die they decay and release carbon into the atmosphere via CO2 and methane

It is estimated that as little as 10% of the carbon captured by trees remains in the soil over the long term but if trees are coppiced, the harvested biomass can be used to produce a continual source of bio-char. Or if they are harvested for other purposes and the incidental waste is used as a feedstock for bio-char production (e.g. in forestry or sugar can production).

Biochar has been attracting growing interest due to its potential in carbon sequestration and in improving soil health. However, further research needs to be undertaken to answer questions about its properties and the benefits associated with its production and application.

This fact sheet explains what biochar is, the process by which it is produced (pyrolysis) and looks at the possible role of biochar as a soil conditioner and in offsetting greenhouse gas emissions.

The knowledge gaps and research questions which need to be addressed in relation to biochar's production and application are also discussed.
It advocates biochar as a strategy to:

•improve the Earth’s soils;

•help mitigate the anthropogenic greenhouse effect by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and sequestering atmospheric carbon in a stable soil carbon pool; and

•improve water quality by retaining agrochemicals.

•sustainable co-production of clean energy and other bio-based products as part of the biochar process;

•efficient biomass utilization in developing country agriculture; and

•cost-effective utilization of urban, agricultural and forest co products.

History of Amazon.com

Jeff Bezon coined the term Amazon.com from the earlier name Cadabra.com. It was the excellent way to present large volume online bookstore. But did he have hidden intentions? It is hard to believe but in the early Internet days, when Yahoo was dominant search engine, results on one page were listed alphabetically. Amazon would always appear above its competition for a specific keywords. This could be a breaking point for Jeff to expand and became what it is today.

Allergy treatment using local honey - That means, honey made by bees living near you - they forage the pollens of plants growing near you which may be causing the allergic reactions. Eating their honey helps to build up immunity to those pollens.

Allergy treatment using vitamin C -

Vitamin C 1,000 mg three to five times daily. Cut back on dosage if loose stools occur. Vitamin C has a natural antihistamine effect on the body.

Cloves

Toothaches can be unbearable, but instead of rushing off to the drugstore to buy the latest product that might not work, use ground cloves to ease the pain. Cloves are a popular item in most spice racks, so there is a good chance you’ll already have this pain-reliever stashed away. Simply crush them up and apply to the affected tooth. Clove oil also works well, but is less common in households.

Powdered Mustard

Mix powdered mustard with flour, add a little bit of water and make a good paste. Spread the paste on a tea towel or cloth. Then, fold the cloth over and place it on your child’s chest or throat. The burning of the mustard miraculously helps to stop irksome coughing. Be sure to remove the cloth if skin becomes irritated or burns.

Onions

Though onions usually make you cry, when it comes to bee stings they may actually help stop the tears. Applying a freshly cut onion to a bee sting or other bug bite helps relieve pain. In a pinch, onions can also be used to treat hives. Steeping some onions and honey together makes an effective cough syrup as well. Breathing in the onion fumes as they are boiling can also help to clear up chest congestion.

Olive Oil

When your child comes to you complaining of an earache, some olive oil just might be the solution. Put a little oil in a container and place the container in boiling water to heat it. Place a few drops of olive oil (you can also use garlic oil) on a cotton ball and place it in the ear, or put a drop or two in the ear and cover with a cotton ball. The cotton should be left on for 10 - 15 minutes. The heat will help to draw out unwanted liquid in the ear.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a miracle substance with all kinds of uses. First, it’s great for cuts and scrapes. Applying a small amount to the latest skateboarding or biking injury will help fight infection and speed up the healing process. Second, using 3 or 4 drops can help clear up swimmer’s ear—a common problem with the younger set. The vinegar will disinfect and dry the ear out, eliminating itching and pain. Finally, placing a little daub of apple cider vinegar onto a cold sore can help heal it. The vinegar should be applied several times a day to assist with healing.

Papercraft Weapons

Papercraft is an evolved form of the ancient art of Japanese origami. While with origami, no glue is used, you are free to use glue and other means of holding the paper or card stock together with papercraft.

Paper Wars is an English art exhibit that features some very well done papercraft weapons. Among the classic cold-war type weapons, they have designed an AK-47, Mills Bomb, MP5, Oerlikon 35mm, and an Uzi. Counterstrike fans should know some of those guns well.

Allergy

What is Allergy?

Have you ever started wheezing after spending too much time outdoors especially in traffic? Or suddenly sneezed when breathing in the fumes released by a factory? Or felt your tongue swell up after eating prawns? Or got a red angry rash on your skin for no apparent reason? Do you often suffer from headaches, nausea, or fatigue? If your answer is yes to any one or more of these questions, then you may be suffering from an allergy.

DEFINITION

The word ‘allergy’ comes from two Greek words, which mean ‘altered reaction’. In case of a living organism’s body, it is the hyper-sensitivity of the immune system to allergens (allergy causing substances). And this makes our immune system attack the body itself! Allergies can be of various types – inhalant, food, chemical, skin, and multiple – and their symptoms can vary from a mild rash to an asthma attack. Some reactions can even lead to death. So are we incapable of taking in these aliens? No, we are not.

ALLERGIC FIGHT

Nature has given many weapons to our bodies against the invasion of unwanted alien substances. These include our nose hair, earwax, skin, and mucous. But the most important among these is our immune system, which produces white blood cells (WBC) to fight infection and diseases. But, the enemy is getting stronger day by day. The increasing number of irritants present in the environment is slowly overpowering our bodies’ natural defenses.

CHANGING ENVIRONMENT

Allergies have existed from time immemorial. However, they were never as widespread or severe as they are today. Normally, natural allergens like pollen cause seasonal allergies, which run their course and die out. But according to most doctors, allergies are no more seasonal. They have become perennial. And this is due to the influence of ‘unnatural’ allergens – like fumes of diesel exhausts, volatile organic solvents (VOC), pesticides, and tobacco smoke.

These health hazards are ever present around us, and we are completely unaware of their threat. Rapid industrialization and an increased dependence on products with high chemical content have wrecked havoc on our environment and in turn, our bodies. Contamination of food and water with pesticides and fertilizers, addiction to processed food items and additives, dust, smog, and constant exposure to VOCs from regularly used substances like plastics, adhesives and paints are all harming our bodies. And our defense systems cannot keep pace with these rapid changes in the environment.

Moreover, it is a vicious cycle. Increase in allergies means reduced efficiency of the immune system, which in turn means that the body becomes more susceptible to diseases.

BATTLE STRATEGY

In the battle against dirt, the central vacuum cleaner is the most high-tech weapon in the arsenal...

we should avoid the use of harmful pesticides and fertilizers, chemical additives in food, use of diesel in vehicles, and smoking in public areas also fall in this danger zone.

Yoga and Pranayam may also help fighting it.

In a nutshell, we must deter the degradation of our environment and work towards cleaning it up.

The Jaipur Foot

Jaipurfoot

The world's first sub-$40 artificial foot.

The Jaipur Foot was developed in India 1970 by orthopaedic surgeon Dr Pramod Karan Sethi and sculptor Ram Chandra. It provided an appropriate, low cost and aesthetic alternative to the Western limb designs otherwise available. The design has revolutionised the lives of thousands of amputees in the developing world.

Bhagwan Mahavir Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), the world's largest charitable organization offers artificial limbs free of charge to those in need. With Mr. D. R. Mehta as the founder, the organization is well known for the development of the "Jaipur foot," the world's first sub-$40 artificial foot, an inexpensive and durable prosthetic. Though many of the recipients of these limbs were originally injured by land mines, Mehta was inspired to found the agency after his own serious car accident.

The modified Jaipur foot has the rubber and wooden ankle block substituted by the more durable Poly-Urethane micro cellular foams are lighter, and could be produced in large numbers in minimum time with improved quality, providing added comfort, gait and durability for the amputees.

PU foot prostheses are bio-mechanically advantageous as far as comfort and injury prevention are concerned. Slip resistance of the PU foot is much higher than other materials. Moreover, slip resistance of the PU material studied over wet and oily surface is also found to be much higher in comparison to rubber and allied materials. Thus, amputees using PU foot prostheses can walk more safely on any type of surface. Besides, its abrasion resistance being higher, PU foot also lasts longer. PU foam foot moulded with cosmetically attractive skin covers made of Poly-Urethanes are found to be more acceptable to amputees and a number of amputees were successfully fitted with such prostheses.

Dont stop Dancing

Famous for dancing on her 'Jaipur foot', Sudha Chandran is a famous Indian actress and classical dancer. Having lost a leg in an accident in 1982, her unshakable will to dance put her back on her feet after indomitable struggle. With the help of the Jaipur foot, which is essentially an artificial leg with which one is capable of working on a farm or even climbing a tree, combined with her persistent effort to perform again, she found herself back on stage. In 1984, a film called Mayuri was made based on her life story: her dancing, her severe accident, then the painful struggle to recovery followed by her triumph over her disability moving on gracefully with her life. This film was translated from Telegu into Hindi entitled Nache Mayuri as well as in English with the same title as her name, Sudha Chandran.

She has shown rare courage and determination to continue the art she loved, adored and practised to perfection, despite her disability and has been performing with no trace of the handicap, fate has imposed on her in all cruelty. In the living memory of the history of any dance system in the world, never has there been a case of a dancer retrieving her glory after having been disabled as did this "Wonder Girl" from Mumbai.

Today, she is an international celebrity, a symbol of hope for millions of disabled all over the world. Millions of students learn her life story in their text books.
